![]() What to consider: 1. Expect a contractor to show up on time for the appointment. Whether a salesperson or the owner of the company, that person should be able to explain the details of the project to you and answer your questions. 2. Does the company you’re dealing with have a track record? A company that’s been around a while should have an address, not just a P.O. box number. Referrals are a good source of information. You can also call the Better Business Bureau or go to their web site to check on the reputability of a company. 3. Proof that a contractor carries comprehensive liability and workers’ compensation insurance is essential to protect you and your property. 4. Find out what credentials a contractor has. Roofing manufacturers often offer certifications to contractors who are trained to install their products. These credentials contribute to the knowledge and professionalism of the contractors and to their commitment to the trade. 5. A request for a deposit or payment for materials in advance could
be a risk. Generally, payment is due upon invoice or completion of
the project. TIPS TO HELP YOU EVALUATE A PROPOSAL A proposal is an agreement that
spells out your options in terms of products by brand name, services
and prices. It should be more than a checklist; you want to be sure
that it’s customized to your
specific project. And it may detail other parameters, such as removal
of debris, protection of existing outdoor fixtures and landscaping,
flashing details, possible roof decking replacement costs and financing
options. It should be accompanied by product samples and color choices. What to consider: 1. The proposal should list your product options, including warranty and performance. The contractor should explain the options and differences in product warranties. The proposal may also offer upgrades or options for any part of the project. 2. Will you receive a written warranty for workmanship? A typical warranty is for one year or longer. But what really matters is whether the contractor will stand behind it. 3. How does the contractor plan to handle cleanup around the perimeter of your property? 4. Does the proposal give the price as a firm number and spell out any payment options?
